Upamanyu was born in Kolkata on 25 September 1993 to Sumona DasGupta and Ranjan Mallik. An adored only grandchild of Eva and Nityananda Dasgupta and Tapati Mallik , the summers of his childhood were spent with his maternal grandparents and his aunt Sukanya Dasgupta who was a second mother to him. He spent the first few years of his life in Hyderabad and started kindergarden school in University of Hyderabad campus school learning to speak fluent Telugu along with Bengali and later Hindi and English.
