The Wonder Years

The Wonder Years

By Baishakhi Sarkar
Upamanyu's childhood playmate and friend

Whenever I recall my childhood in Kolkata, the first person who pops up in my mind is Apu. I grew up in his grandparents’ house and I was three and a half when he was born. Our days were filled with laughter, fights, games, and the kind of innocent joy that only childhood friends can share. All the summer vacations were filled with Apu’s bright smile.

As we grew older, he encouraged me to strive for excellence and never give up, always emphasizing the importance of understanding and empathy. I was in awe of his intelligence and his ability to break down complex ideas into simple, comprehensible parts.

Though he left this world far too soon, Apu’s spirit continues to inspire me to live life to the fullest and to cherish the friendships that grace my path. My childhood was enriched by his presence, and I will always hold our memories close to my heart
